In a nutshell: The key bits
Sweaty Face Alert!
This text takes a look at all the different jobs sweating does on your face.
Excessive Facial Sweating Can Be a Real Pain
Sweating is a normal and essential bodily function that helps regulate our body temperature. When we exercise or it's particularly warm, we start to sweat – and that includes our face, as sweat glands are distributed all over our bodies.
However, when our sweat production kicks into overdrive even in everyday situations, and we find ourselves literally with sweat dripping down our foreheads, it can be a real nuisance for many.
Heavy facial sweating affects some people more than others. When beads of sweat increasingly form on the forehead, cheeks, chin, upper lip, nose, and neck, it becomes difficult to hide.
Facial sweat is often a source of embarrassment for those who experience it – especially when it occurs alongside blushing. The pattern is usually similar: it starts with uncontrollable flushing of the facial skin, followed by hot flushes in the face or a warming sensation in specific areas. To counteract this increased facial temperature, the body responds with heightened sweat gland activity – as a result, you start sweating on your face.
But why do some people sweat so heavily on their face in particular?
Our sweat glands, controlled by our nervous system, are responsible for sweat production. These glands are found on almost all parts of our body. There's a particularly high concentration of sweat glands on the face, under the arms, on the hands, and on the feet. When our body temperature rises – for whatever reason – these sweat glands become active and release what we call sweat. This evaporates on the skin, providing a cooling effect. Sweating, therefore, protects the body from overheating.
However, if this system becomes unbalanced, and we start to sweat excessively on our face even when it's not particularly warm around us, there can be various underlying reasons. Often, unfavourable lifestyle factors can be identified as the culprits.
Increased facial sweating can result from a poor diet (highly spiced foods or irregular, unhealthy eating habits), being overweight, or excessive smoking or alcohol consumption.
But our mental state also plays a significant role. Mental conflicts such as feelings of anxiety, tension, nervousness, and emotional fluctuations (intense feelings of happiness or depression) can cause sufferers to break out in a sweat on their forehead. The reason for this is that emotions are influenced by the hypothalamus. This part of the brain also controls the nerves connected to the sweat glands.
Frequent dabbing, cool damp cloths, and cold air offer only limited relief, and those affected often wonder how they can address this problem.
What Can You Do About Facial Sweating?
First and foremost, you should discuss your concerns with your doctor if necessary. If illnesses or medication side effects can be ruled out as the cause, then try the following measures, which may provide relief.
1. Daily Facial Skincare
Use a non-greasy facial moisturiser to care for your facial skin. Oil-based creams can create a film on the skin and potentially worsen facial sweating.2. Adjust Your Make-Up
Avoid heavy make-up that you might use to cover up sweat. It can actually increase sweat production. If you don't want to go without make-up, opt instead for light tinted day creams or light liquid foundations – ideally suited to oily, blemish-prone skin. This will not only give your face a natural complexion but also won't clog your pores, allowing your skin to "breathe" and reducing the likelihood of sweating.3. The Right Diet
Avoid foods that are difficult to digest and heavily spiced. These put unnecessary strain on your body and will inevitably make you sweat. Instead, opt for easily digestible, varied whole foods.4. Sufficient Hydration
Drinking enough fluids is essential and ensures fresh, healthy skin. Especially if you sweat a lot, you should make sure to balance your water levels. Adequate hydration is very important for maintaining the body's vitality. The fluid lost – including through sweating – must be replenished. To replenish your fluid reserves, you should drink at least 2 litres throughout the day. This will pleasantly refresh your body and simultaneously provide it with minerals and electrolytes lost through sweating.5. Avoid Ice-Cold Drinks
Although the temptation may be strong, please avoid drinking ice-cold beverages, as these can encourage the body to produce heat and thus have a counterproductive effect. The same phenomenon applies to showering. Therefore, don't shower in cold water, but rather lukewarm.6. Antiperspirants for the Face
Antiperspirants not only help against excessive underarm sweating but also against sweating on the face and neck.Applying Antiperspirants to the Face
Antiperspirants narrow the sweat ducts and thus, with regular use, regulate sweat production in the long term. When using antiperspirants, sweat production is specifically regulated in the areas of the body where it's not essential for normal heat regulation.
First-Time Application on the Face
- Apply the antiperspirant in the evening before going to bed. Cleanse your face as usual and dry it thoroughly. Please ensure that your skin is clean, dry, intact, and has no injuries.
- Dispense the liquid onto your fingertips or a cotton pad. To do this, simply glide the roll-on over your fingertips. Then, using your fingertips, gently and evenly massage the liquid into the affected areas in a thin layer. Alternatively, use an EVERDERY Body Wipe and gently stroke it over the affected skin areas.
- The next day, you can wash, moisturise, and apply make-up as usual.
- Repeat this process during the initial application until the desired effect is achieved, but for a maximum of 2-3 consecutive days!
Subsequent Applications
- Only apply the antiperspirant as needed, for example, as soon as you notice increased facial sweating again. This depends entirely on your personal sweating habits, e.g., once a week before going to bed.
- Repeat the application as described for the first-time use: once in the evening before going to bed, massage it into clean, dry, and intact skin or gently stroke the affected areas with the wipe. This is sufficient to refresh the effect.
- The effect will then last for several days to weeks.
