In a nutshell: Key points at a glance
Aluminium doesn't get into your body through healthy skin
This text highlights that antiperspirants are safe when used properly.
Concerns About Aluminium Absorption Through Skin Are Unfounded
This is confirmed by the statement from the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung - BfR) dated 20th July 2020.
The use of aluminium in antiperspirants is safe.
The BfR was asked by the European Commission to conduct an assessment. This statement by the BfR is based on the findings of scientific studies.
In their statement 030/2020 dated 20th July 2020, they state:
- Studies on aluminium-containing antiperspirants demonstrate that health issues from aluminium absorption through the skin are UNLIKELY!
- The absorption of aluminium through the skin could not be measured.
The BfR has access to 3 human studies with significant results. These served as the scientific basis for the calculation of the new risk assessment. This data is of high quality, meaningful, and consistent.
The European Commission also confirms the safety of aluminium in cosmetic products in their document (March 2020).
