Getting a proper sweat on your back and neck is a common bother, and it can be triggered by all sorts – heat, exercise, stress, or even if you're a bit under the weather. For example, there are around 50-80 sweat glands per square centimetre on your back. To compare, under your arms, there are approximately 120-160 per square centimetre. Sweat glands are controlled by the body's nervous system and release sweat when the brain registers an increase in body temperature. An elevated body temperature and the associated sweating are therefore completely normal if you're exercising, the outside temperatures are high, or you're dressed too warmly. However, a poor diet and lifestyle, alcohol consumption, being overweight, and stress can also be reasons for heavy sweating on your back and neck.
What problems are associated with excessive sweating on the back and neck?
For those affected, heavy sweating on the back and neck is very unpleasant. Wet patches in the back and neck area are difficult to hide with clothing. However, excessive back and neck sweating can usually be managed well. With the right tips and tricks, you can quickly say goodbye to sweat marks and odour and discover a new lease on life.

4 Tips to Combat Back and Neck Sweating
1. Contrast Showers
Contrast showers can help improve your body's sensitivity to heat and cold. By alternating between showering your back with cold and warm water, you regulate your body temperature and really get your circulation going in the morning. Always finish your contrast shower with lukewarm water.
2. Wear Breathable Clothing
We've all been there: you're sweating on a hot summer's day, and your tight t-shirt is practically glued to your back. If you suffer from heavy to very heavy sweating, you probably experience this problem not just on hot summer days, but all year round. Tight clothing that isn't very breathable causes our backs to sweat more because heat gets trapped. Therefore, if you experience heavy back sweating, opt for breathable (performance) clothing made from cotton, linen, or special types of yarn. This allows your body heat to escape more easily, and you'll feel fresher for longer.
3. Use Antiperspirants
Antiperspirants are effective aids against heavy sweating. In the form of wipes, roll-ons, or sprays, they can be applied particularly well to the back and neck. When antiperspirants are used regularly, they temporarily narrow the sweat pores. This can reduce sweat production and prevent sweat marks and odour. Highly effective antiperspirants show positive effects after the first 2-3 days. Once the desired effect occurs, the frequency of application is reduced. Studies show that the use of antiperspirants containing aluminium salts is particularly efficient and, at the same time, completely safe on intact skin. This is also confirmed by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in its statement, referring to high-quality, scientific studies.
4. Properly Care for Sweaty Skin
Take care of your sweaty skin with products that are suitable for your skin type. Oil-based shower gels and body lotions leave a greasy film on your skin, which can cause you to sweat even more. Skincare products for sweaty skin, on the other hand, gently cleanse your skin and provide intense moisture WITHOUT being greasy. Antibacterial skincare products specifically for sweaty skin also gently combat odour-causing bacteria while also caring for your skin. Bath or back brushes are also particularly suitable for application to the back. Simply put your skincare products on the brush and gently apply them. Leave it on briefly and then rinse off as usual with lukewarm water.
Increased Back and Neck Sweat at Night?
Some people sweat heavily on their backs, especially at night. Night sweats can have many different causes. The simplest reason for night sweats is trapped heat: the bedroom is too warm, the bedding and mattress aren't very breathable, and the room isn't ventilated enough. In this case, you can counteract night sweats with simple tricks like breathable mattress toppers or thinner bedding. However, night sweats can also occur more frequently during menopause or puberty. Have you had a stressful day and need to process this strain overnight? This can also make you sweat a lot at night. The back, in particular, is often affected by heavy sweating in these cases.
